AT Experience | Winding Stair Gap to NOC NC

This is a 3 day/2 night backpacking adventure on the trail. We will start at Winding Stair Gap and make our way to the Nantahala Outdoor Center. We will hike a total of 27.3 miles. The trail rating for this section is intermediate/difficult. Elevation: 5,336 high/1,722 low. If you have a fear of heights, you will concur them on this adventure with our help. We will have the opportunity to climb a fire tower with magnificent views. Due to the difficulty of this section, you will carry only the necessities.

When we pull into the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) on the last day, we will enjoy lunch at the restaurant and a dip in the river to cool off. A perfect way to end your adventure before you head home.

REQUIREMENT:

  • You must be able to carry your own gear (15 - 20 pounds)

  • You must be able to hike longer distances in higher elevations

  • You must have your own backpack and gear to include trekking poles

  • You must be able to hike on a trail that is rated intermediate/difficult

Day 1: We will meet at the NOC. The shuttle will take us to Winding Stair Gap where we will begin our trek. You will be guided 11 miles to Wayah Shelter where we will make camp for the night. We will stop to enjoy the views at the Wayah Observation Tower before we reach the shelter.

Day 2: We will make our way to Wesser Bald Shelter and trek 10.6 miles for the day. If the weather is clear we will enjoy amazing views at the Wesser Bald Tower

Day 3: We will make our way along the 5.7 miles towards the NOC where we will end with lunch at the restaurant and a dip in the river to cool off.

WHAT YOU GET:

  • Experienced guide (Wilderness First Responder)

  • Guidance on hiking, setting up camp, water purification, food storage and safety

  • Shuttle Service

  • Guide will carry bear spray, first aid kit, survival kit, JetBoil, water purification system, and fire starter kit

  • Packing List will be provided

We recommend using a bear canister. The cost is around $75.00 but well worth the investment. If you are unable to purchase one, you will need to hang your food bags.
