The Monthly Dirt | May 2019

We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.
— Maya Angelou

When I was younger I found myself not trying new things simply because of the fear of failure. I have learned over the years that I was looking at failure or defeat as a bad thing instead of a place where I grow and learn. So if you encounter defeat don’t let it defeat you, instead find strength and determination to keep trying. Step out of your comfort zone and try new things, test your limits, and embrace even the defeat.

Being A Mother

Being a mother is learning about strengths you didn’t know you had and dealing with fears you didn’t know existed.

Happy Mother’s Day to all you amazing and beautiful Moms!

THE DIRT ON GEAR

TENTS

Decision points:

Capacity | Seasonality | Weight | Livability

We recommend getting a 3-season tent. You should also purchase a footprint (goes under your tent). You also need to make sure it comes with a fly which covers your tent.

Less weight = more money but tents have come a long way and you can find a reasonably priced tent that is less than 5 pounds.

PILLOW

You can purchase a camp pillow but remember the more weight you carry the harder the hike is. You can roll up some of your clothes into a shirt or jacket and use that as a pillow.

TIP

Choose a pullover sports bra without any clasps which can dig into your skin if they end up under your pack straps.

Outdoor Skills Course | June 22nd

Join us for our skills day where you will learn backpacking/hiking basics, trail safety, and wilderness survival. You will leave feeling empowered and ready to explore.

Our mission is to provide women with the necessary skills to safely explore the great outdoors. Whether you want to enjoy day hikes or a backpacking adventure, we will give you the confidence to get out there and the skills to do it safely.

You will spend the day learning skills while having fun. We believe in hands-on learning so you will have a chance to practice some of the skills you learn. We will take a break so bring your lunch.
