Why Take Our Backpacking Basics Class?

This class is a great place to start if you want to start hiking or experience a backpacking adventure. There are many dangers if you are not prepared. This class will provide you the necessary skills and knowledge to have safe and fun adventures. You will learn everything you need to know, step by step.

We start with the planning process, which includes the importance of an itinerary and how to write one, trail alerts and conditions, weather conditions, Rangers, food, trail ratings, learning about wildlife, gear you will need, how to pack and a final check.

You will learn how to set up three main areas when camping in the backcountry, how to properly go to the bathroom, Leave No Trace ethics, trail blazes, building a safe fire, wildlife safety practices, water purification, backcountry cooking and food storage. You will also learn how to measure correctly for a pack, gear tips, footwear, first aid kits, and clothing. We will have a segment on wilderness first aid also.

A lot of information is provided in this class, so we recommend bringing a notebook to take notes. You will have hands-on practice in this class to master all the skills needed to keep you safe.

Leave a Piece of Yourself

Leave a Piece of Yourself

Through the years I have met some very interesting people that I spent only a moment with. The stories that I’ve been told, the things I’ve been taught, and the kindness that is shared are all amazing things I have brought off the trail. I have learned that there are basically three types of people you will pass along the trail.

Young Iron Braider's

We have a great new course for young ladies. This course was developed to get girls interested and comfortable with the great outdoors. The girls will spend their time experiencing success and building confidence. Through learning new skills and applying them, they will gain a sense of pride, grow more independent, improve social skills, reconnect with nature, and make new friends. Too often our girl's social circles exist primarily on social media. We want to get them away from technology and back to nature. The skills they will learn, while having fun, will not only keep them safe in the wilderness but also help them with their everyday life. We will spend time teaching them safety, fire building, food gathering, water sources, shelter, first aid, and how to signal for help. In addition, we will teach them about wildlife, how to set up camp, and basic backpacking knowledge. If you would like additional information please visit our Courses page or contact us directly. We look forward to watching the girl's confidence grow while having a great time.

Len Foote Hike Inn & Amicalola Falls

We had an amazing adventure!

The weather was perfect, the company was great, and we met some great people along the way. After about a six-mile hike, we made it to the Len Foote Hike Inn. We enjoyed a tour of the facility, a great dinner, a frustrating puzzle, and hot drinks to warm us up in the cool weather. The next morning, after a hot breakfast, we made our way back down the trail. After lunch, we visited the Amicolala Falls to end our trip.

Take the First Step

Take the First Step

When you have a group of women and all they have to worry about is their basic survival needs, you have a very powerful force.  Stepping out of your comfort zone and into the wilderness surrounded by other women who are there to encourage you, give help when you need it, and laugh about life, is an amazing experience. Every decision you make as a group can determine your success or failure.  You gain a greater respect for the wildlife, the weather, your skills, and just how beautiful and inspiring those mountains are.  I'm not going to lie to you.  The wilderness can be unforgiving at times, but with proper planning, preparation, and guidance it gives you everything you need to survive and strengthen your soul.
